Orbit@home

Orbit @ home is a program that runs on the BOINC infrastructure Distributed - computing project that allows threats to be analyzed, which may arise ( or also called " Earth's orbit cruiser" ) of near-Earth objects. In these near-Earth objects are, for example asteroids or comets that pass through the earth in a relatively short distance and therefore, . Due to a possible strike, may pose a significant risk

History

The Orbit @ home project began on 15 June 2005 with the (pre) - alpha test phase. Almost a month later, on 5 July 2005, slightly more than 1000 registered participants have already been counted.

The Orbit @ home program for BOINC should then actually be generally available in August 2005 and also relevant work units are delivered. The creation of additional subscriber accounts has been disabled from mid-2005.

On 26 February 2007, the beta test phase of the project was initiated and the application of new participants reactivated. Since then, should be supported in addition to the previously supported version of Linux, and the Windows and Macintosh platforms.

In 2008, it was announced that the translation ( port) on the Windows platform - was ready and that the translation for the Macintosh platform (Mac OS X) is started - which is based on the Free Software ORSA.

In 2009, a simulation was completed, was tested in which, among other things with an artificial population of near-Earth objects, how efficient are the search strategies used.

Since September 2010, Orbit @ home uses real data from specialized surveys on near-Earth objects.

More details

In the Project Orbit @ home funded by NASA are also similar to SETI @ home, previously collected data only (server - side) into small work units (English " work units ", or " WU " ) are prepared in order then to to distribute the client machine, then where the actual evaluation of the work units will take place.

As the actual project goal of Orbit @ home, one has also in the naming obviously best known distributed - computing project - SETI @ home - oriented.
