Orchomenus (Arcadia)

The Arcadian Orchomenus (Greek Ὀρχομενός ( m. sg. ) ) Was an ancient Greek city in Arcadia ( Peloponnese ). The city was the 750 m height and is mentioned in Homer. In the 7th century BC, it was the leading power in Arcadia. Since the 6th century BC it belonged to the Peloponnesian League. She was represented during the Persian Wars with 600 hoplites at the Battle of Plataea. After changing alliances it was 233 BC by Antigonus III. Doson conquered. In Roman times it was almost abandoned after the testimony of Strabo and Pausanias, but their continued existence testifies to the 4th century AD.

The site shows a city wall, Agora, the remains of a temple of Artemis, and especially the remains of a theater dating from the 4th century BC Near the archaeological area there are remains of a dam, which was probably built in Mycenaean times.
