Large kegs worm ( Orcula dolium )

The Great Snail kegs ( Orcula dolium ), also called Great Tönnchenschnecke, is a species of snail from the family of kegs snails ( Orculidae ), the ( gastropod ) is counted for subordination of terrestrial snails.

Features

The case measures 6.7 to 9 mm in height and 3 mm to 3.6 mm in diameter. It is thick cylindrical in shape with a flachkonischen Apex. There are 8.5 to 10 flat rounded, slowly increasing turns available. The mouth is round with a wide turned-up edge. The mouth extend three blades into two at the spindle side ( " Columellarfalten "), a wall at the mouth ( " Parietalfalte "). The color of the body varies from yellowish brown to reddish brown. It is finely streaked and irregular; often it is also encrusted black. Above all pups stick to camouflage faecal pellets on the whorls.

Occurrence, lifestyle and dissemination

The animals live on limestone rocks, scree slopes, in the rubble and leaf litter mainly at higher elevations ( montane ). In Switzerland, the nature rises to 2000 m. The species is native to the Alps and the Carpathians. It is possible that the distribution area to North Africa, Ethiopia and Iran extends.

System

Orcula dolium ( Draparnaud, 1801) is the type species of the genus Orcula Held, 1838. In Central Europe, numerous geographical races can be distinguished.
