Order of Montesa

The Order of Montesa is a Spanish order of knighthood. It was founded in 1316 by James II of Aragon after the dissolution of the Knights Templar in the fight against the Moors, and endowed with the goods of the Templars.

The Order of Montesa was founded mainly for the purpose of the Templars to offer shelter. The cross of the Order is very similar to the Templars. Also, the Order received the city Peniscola with the castle Castillo de Montesa. 1400, the Order of San Jorge de Alfama he was connected. He depended on the Benedictine Rule and recognized the Order of Calatrava as a leader. 1587 was the office of Grand Master over to the Spanish king. As a result, the Order was transformed into a secular Order of Merit.
