Order of Saint Peter of Cetinje

The family north of Saint Peter was a House Order of the Montenegrin dynasty Petrović - Njegosch.

The Order was founded in 1870 by Prince ( later King ) of Montenegro Nicholas I in memory of his uncle Danilo I. and simultaneously to the Vladika, Saints Peter I. Petrowić - Njegosch of Cetinje, the Montenegrin reigned 48 years and the independence of the country consolidated.

The Order was a one-class chest decoration. The cross of the Order was a red enameled Maltese cross with white trim. In the angles of the cross, there were golden lions. The center medallion on obverse showed the figure of the Virgin Mary in front of red background and surrounded by a blue band with the Cyrillic inscription Crnogorski Danilo ( Danilo of Montenegro). In reverse the medallion bore the years of data " 1852-3 " as a reminder of the year in which the country's independence was recognized by the powers and as framing the inscription ( trans. ) " For the independence of Montenegro ". The top cross arm was still a golden lion and above him the silver double-headed eagle of Montenegro with full regalia, topped by a golden crown. The Order was worn on a red-blue- white triangle ribbon of Austrian model.

The order was awarded only to members of the dynasty, their descendants and some foreign heads of state, eg to the Tsar Alexander II, Nicholas ' sons Peter I of Serbia and Victor Emmanuel III. of Italy and Alexander I of Yugoslavia, who brought his maternal grandfather, King Nicholas later for the throne.

After the death of King Nicholas in 1921, the order was given only as a private house order.
