Order of St. George (Hanover)

The Order of St. George was founded on 23 April in 1839 by King Ernst August of Hanover, and came with a few exceptions only to ruling chiefs and members of sovereign houses the award ceremony. After the annexation of the kingdom by Prussia in 1866, the Order as a religious house was preserved and continue to be awarded in rare cases.

Order of classes

The Order had only one class and the number of members was limited to 16. Exceptions to this are the royal princes, the Knight of the Order were born.

Order decoration

The religious character is a goldgerändertes, eight-pointed, dark blue enameled Maltese cross, with balls at the tips and vorwärtstehenden lions in the angles. The royal crown crowns the cross. Within a broader gold red enameled tire shows the medallion on the front of St. George the green dragon with a spear killing. On the back are the initials of the founder EAR ( Ernest Augustus Rex ) on golden background.

For orders include a religious star of eight brill -guaranteed beams. In medieval shield the medallion above that of a red enameled band with the Order Currency Nunquam retrorsum ( never backward) is enclosed in golden letters.

Carrying method

The gem was born on a dark red sash from the right to the left shoulder.

Award numbers

A total of 82 awards can be detected. Including at the Hanoverian State Minister Carl von Alten, the Prussian Minister of State Wilhelm zu Sayn -Wittgenstein- Hohenstein, the Austrian Minister Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich and the marshals Josef Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz and Alfred I. zu Windisch -Graetz. The last documented ceremony took place in 1900 by Ernst August to Prince Maximilian of Baden.
