Order of the Iron Crown

The Order of the Iron Crown was an existing 1805-1814 Award of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy.

Foundation

The Order was instituted on June 5, 1805 Napoleon Bonaparte after his coronation as King of Italy under the name of the Ordre de la Couronne de Fer or Ordine della Corona di Ferro.

Order of classes

The Order consisted of three classes and the number of members was limited thereby.

  • Dignitaries (20 )
  • Commanders (100 )
  • Ritter ( 500)

Of these, five Grand Cross, Commanders fifty and two hundred knights crosses French officers and soldiers reserved. Grand Master was the respective King of Italy. On December 19, 1807 Advanced Napoleon the Order to fifteen Grand Cross, Commanders fifty and three hundred knights.

Order signs and carrying method

The religious character shows a French eagle with a flash and the Iron Crown of Lombardy in the catches to it has given me a tape with the Order motto DIEU ME L'A Donne, GARE à QUI Y TOUCHERA (God, woe to him who it touches ) overcomes.

The award was supported by an orange ribbon with green border stripes. The Grand Cross was worn with a golden Breast Star, the profile of Napoleon shows in the medallion, and a sash from the left shoulder to right hip. On the star the motto can be seen in Italian DIO ME L' HA DATA, QUAI A CHI LA TOCCHERÀ. Commanders and Knights wore the award at the left chest. In the latter the religious character instead of gold in silver is made.

After the fall of Napoleon

After the fall of Napoleon Lombardy was awarded the Austrian empire in the proceedings of the Congress of Vienna. Emperor Franz I wearing of religious character and prohibit founded on April 7, 1815 an Austrian " Order of the Iron Crown" as a military and civil order of merit. Subsequently, the owner of the Napoleonic Order received a carrying permit for the Austrian version of the loaned them the Order class.

1868, the Order of the Crown of Italy was named after the Iron Crown, which was donated by King Victor Emanuel II as Merit to commemorate the unification of Italy.
