Geography

Oregon is located on the Rock River and extends over 5.44 km ², spread over 5.18 km ² land and 0.26 km ² water surface.

By Oregon runs the Illinois State Route 64, which crosses the Rock River. In the city center leading along the Rock River Illinois State Route 2 crosses

A few kilometers below the road bridge over the Rock River crosses a railway line of the BNSF Railway and the river into east-west direction through the city.

The nearest large towns are Rockford (41,6 km northeast), Chicago (161 km east), Ottawa (Illinois ) (122 km south- south-east ), the Quad Cities (138 km southeast), Clinton in Iowa ( 84.3 km west ) and Dubuque (149 km west-northwest ).

History

Before white settlers arrived in the area of the tribes of Indians lived Potawatomi and Winnebago here. After the Conquest many mounds were found from the epoch of the Mississippian culture. The name means Oregon River of the West.

The first white settlers in the area was John Phelps, who first came here in 1829 and in 1833 finally settling here. Other pioneers followed so soon a church, a school, a general store, a blacksmith shop and a post office were opened it. In 1838 the settlement of the administration of the Ogle County Oregon City was officially registered.

In 1847 there were in the city a grocery store, a sawmill, a ferry across the Rock River and 44 households with a total population of 225 inhabitants. During the 1850s and 1860s, the city continued to grow, as reflected in the increase of the church buildings.

In 1870 the official presentation of the status of "City", which was adopted on April 1, 1869 by the Illinois General Assembly. With James Gale, the first mayor was elected in March 1870.

1871 Oregon was connected to the railway network, thereby rapid industrialization could take place. In Oregon, a mill, a furniture factory and a foundry, which existed until the 1960s emerged. In the 1870s, Oregon had about 2,000 inhabitants.

1920, still in use today by Oregon City Hall was built.

In 1891 the courthouse for the Ogle County at the intersection of Washington Street (Illinois State Route 64) and Fourth Street (Illinois State Route 2) was built in downtown Oregon.

The sculptor Lorado Taft, built from 1908 to 1911 north of Oregon on a hill overlooking the valley of the Rock River, a 15 m high Black Hawk Statue. Originally, the statue was named The Eternal Indian ( Eng.: The Eternal Indian ), while today it is named after Black Hawk, the former living in the area chief of the Sauk.

Culture

In 1898 the sculptor Lorado Taft founded the artists' colony of Eagle 's Nest Art Colony north of the city. Taft and his artists' colony began to impact on the city of Oregon and exert their culture. One result of this was that the 1908 -built building, the Oregon Public Library had a second floor, where an art gallery was established. The artists of the colony enhanced the cultural life of the city of Oregon in the various fields of art.

1904 Taft created the statue of The Blind, then began work on his monumentaleres Black Hawk Statue. In the countryside of Oregon are a number of other works by Lorado Taft.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 a population of 4,060 was determined. These distributed to 1,667 households in 1,066 families. The population density was 783.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 1,794 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 346.3 per square kilometer buildings.

The population was in 2000 from 96.0 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native Americans, Asians 0.6 percent and 0.9 percent other. 1.3 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 2.3 percent of the population consisted of Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.

23.8 percent were under 18 years, 7.9 percent between 18 to 24, 28.7 percent of 25-44, 22.0 percent from 45 to 64 and 17.6 percent 65 and older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females were statistically 93.8 men in the over 18 -year-old 93.0.

The median income per household was 34 842 U.S. dollars ( USD), the median family income $ 41,250. The median income for men was $ 35,247, and for women about $ 20,652. The per capita income amounted to $ 19,019. Around 10.8 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the total population were income below the poverty line.
