Oreocereus celsianus is a species of the genus Oreocereus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet honors celsianus the French gardener Jean -François Cels (1810-1888), who was with his brother Auguste Cels (1809-1898) known for the cultivation of cacti and orchids.

Description

Oreocereus celsianus grows with branched from the base, erect, columnar stems and reached at a diameters from 8 to 12 inches stature heights of up to 2 meters. The shoots are wrapped tightly by white hairs and spines. There are 10 to 25 rounded ribs and gehöckerte available. The present thereon large areolae are white, densely covered with thorns and with up to 5 centimeters long hair covered. Oreocereus celsianus is common in the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca, Potosí and Tarija and the Argentine province of Jujuy Puna vegetation at altitudes 2900-3600 meters.

The first description was in 1850 as Pilocereus celsianus by Charles Lemaire in Joseph Salm- Dyck Reifferscheidt - Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849. Vincenzo Riccobono it in 1909 in the genus Oreocereus.
