Oreocereus trollii

Oreocereus is a genus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name is derived from the Greek noun " oreo " for mountain and refers to the area of ​​distribution of plants.

Description

The species of the genus Oreocereus grow bushy, branching from the base only sparse and reach stature heights of 2 to 3 meters. Strains are rarely trained. The upright, hanging or rarely unplugged cylindrical shoots are notched between the ribs or warty. The areoles often have long white hair and a thick spines.

The tube- to funnel-shaped, more or less radial symmetry, orange to red to purple flowers occur near the growing tip, or sometimes from the terminal cephalium, and open on the day. The flower tube is straightened up a bit and sometimes laterally compressed. The numerous areoles on the Perikarpell and the flowers are hairy tube. The spherical to oblong fruits contain broad oval, dull or shiny black seeds.

Systematics and distribution

Oreocereus is in the Andes at altitudes of over 3000 meters, in southern Peru, northern Chile, widespread in southern Bolivia and northern Argentina. Alwin Berger presented Oreocereus 1905 as a subgenus of Cereus ( Cereus subg. Oreocereus ) on. Vincenzo Riccobono raised the subgenus then in 1909 to the rank of genus. The type species of the genus is Pilocereus celsianus.
