Oreste Zamor

Emmanuel Oreste Zamor (* 1861 in Hinche, † July 27, 1915 in Port -au -Prince ) was a Haitian general, politician, and President of Haiti.

Biography

After school he joined the army in 1888. After finally uses in the garrisons in Saint -Michel -de- l'Atalaye, Limbe, Dessalines and Gonaïves he was promoted to General. Together with his brother Charles Zamor he was commander of an army of rebellious peasants ( Cacos ).

Twelve days after the resignation of Michel Oreste on January 27, 1914, he was elected on February 8, 1914 for a term of seven years as President of Haiti. His cabinet was his brother Charles ( Carlos ) Zamor as Interior Minister.

Unfortunately for the brothers Zamor him the banks granted loans no further, so that they soon did not have the funds to pay for their soldiers. However, after the declaration of war by his former ally and current rival Joseph Davilmar Théodore and his associates Dr. Rosalvo Bobo against his government, he resigned already on October 29, 1914, rather than assuming an American military support and a " protected status " (Protectorate ). A significant influence on U.S. policy had it, the then U.S. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, although it withdrew in June 1915, whose previous actions but essentially laid the foundation for the soon following the intervention of the United States Marines in Haiti.

Charles Zamor fled first to the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, then, while Oreste Zamor initially sought by France on a merchant ship protection. However, he was captured shortly thereafter by the insurgents and murdered in the National Penitentiary in Port-au -Prince, nine months later.
