Org-mode

Org -mode is a program for the free text editor, Emacs, which is used to collect notes to draft texts and to publish them if necessary. To this end, this holds also provides editing functions for project planning and task management. All content are recorded in plain text and provided with its own simplified markup language.

History

Original author of Org -mode was Carsten Dominik, who began developing in 2003. The project was conducted in early 2013 of January, 2011 by Bastien Guerry. With version 8.0 in April 2013 Bastien Guerry resigned as maintainer and Carsten Dominik took over once again to lead the project. Org -mode has been officially recorded for the first time in Emacs 22.

The aim was to develop especially an editing mode (major mode) for Emacs, with which it is possible notes for scientific work, which are present as pure text input, they "organize" to (hence the name org mode) and to combine this with the same features for project management.

The older Outline mode in Emacs appeared Dominik this insufficient because he was too much oriented on an outline with headings and lists are not supported. In addition, the keyboard shortcuts it appeared difficult to be remembered. He stood in front of a user interface in which the commands can be connected in a cycle. In addition, it should be possible to restructure the layout of the notes.

Functions

Org -mode makes Emacs to an outline editor (English: Outliner ), the hierarchically structured headings with the associated text enfold and can re - organize. Breakdown points can be moved together with the sub-items within a list, both vertically (within the order of the list ) and horizontally (in terms of level of detail ). Structural elements are highlighted in color.

The text can be formatted and structured in many ways ( for example, awards for bold / italics, lists, footnotes). Hyperlinks to external resources can be inserted. In addition, a table editor is included, with which you enter flexible tables in plain text and can also edit later. The table also simple calculations are possible.

Each note can be annotated with metadata (tags, deadlines, time stamp ) that serve to project planning. An Agenda View can take weeks or show all time-related metadata in the form of a daily calendar. These Org -mode works on request with the calendar (Calendar ) and the diary ( Diary ) Emacs together.

Since you can combine structure, body text and program source code freely with each other, Org -mode, it is possible to use even for literate programming.

MobileOrg serves as a connection to smartphones and tablets that run on iOS and Android. This purpose are free apps available that can read an export of Org -mode and offline edit.
