Life

Jón Stefánsson grew up as the son of a farmer in the area surrounding Lake Mývatn on. He formed mostly self-taught. After the death of both parents - the mother died in 1860, his father in 1868 - he worked on various farms in the area. He married in 1877 and eventually settled in 1889 on the farm Litla Strönd down, which he managed.

His literary career came late in transition. First publications were made in the 1880s in local newspapers. He chose Thorgils Gjallandi as a pseudonym, the name of a person from the Old Icelandic Egilssaga. His first book was ofan úr sveitum, a band with three short stories and a novella, published in 1892. It was not until ten years later, he published the novel Upp við fossa his second book. Both ofan úr sveitum and Upp við fossa accuse the Icelandic Church and its perceived as backward positions. In 1910 he published a collection of animal stories ( Dýrasögur ) that were previously published in the journal Dýravinurinn.
