Orhei (Romanian )

Orhei [ Orhej ] (Russian Оргеев Orgejew, Ukrainian Оргіїв Orhijiw, Yiddish אוריוו Uriv ) is a Moldovan city in Orhei Raion and is located 50 km north of the capital Chişinău.

History

Orhei got its name from the medieval city of Old Orhei (Romanian Orheiul Vechi ), which btw 14th and 16th century was destroyed by the Crimean Tatars. Orhei served the Turkish armed forces as a main base in northern Bessarabia before it was captured in 1812 by the Russian Empire.

After the First World War Orhei was, like all of Bessarabia, part of the Romanian Kingdom. 1940, the city was occupied by the Soviet Union and 1944 during Operation Jassy - Kishinev completely destroyed. After the war it was rebuilt.

1991 Orhei part of Moldova and 2003 capital of Rajons Orhei.

Sports

Orhei is home to the football first division club FC Milsami, which in 2012 won the Moldovan Football Cup. His plays denies the club in Complexul Sportiv Raional.
