Oriel College, Oxford

The Oriel College (full name: The House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford, Commonly called Oriel College, of the Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory, sometime King of England) is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford; It was founded in 1324 by Adam de Brome.

Edward II was created in 1326 in honor of the Virgin Mary The House of Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford after he was rescued at the Battle of Bannockburn. The original building was called L' Oriole, so that the college was named Oriel College. In the 17th century, the front building was extensively restored in a magnificent Gothic style.

Fellow of Oriel College were among many others, John Keble, John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey.
