Orient-Institut Beirut

The Orient- Institut Beirut (OIB ) is one of the ten German foreign direct federal institutes of Max Weber Foundation - German Humanities Institutes Abroad. The OIB was founded in 1961 by the German Oriental Society, and belongs to, based in Bonn since 2003, Max Weber Foundation. Funded by the Foundation is the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The OIB conducts and promotes research on the history and present of the Middle East and the Arab world. It performs this task in collaboration with academic institutions and researchers in the region.

History

The Orient- Institut Beirut in 1961, founded by the German Oriental Society. The funding of the Institute then took over the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT, today BMBF), the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation. In 2003, the OIB was included in the Max Weber Foundation. The guided since 1987 as an extension of the OIB Orient- Institut Istanbul ( Istanbul OI ) was an independent institution in 2009 within the Max Weber Foundation. Since 2010, the OIB is increasingly working together with partners in Egypt.

Tasks and academic profile

The research on the history and present of the Middle East and the Arab world are a wide range of research interests and methods of the humanities and social sciences space. Library

The Public Library of OIB comprises of 130,000 volumes and 1700 periodicals, online catalogs and W - Lan. The collection includes studies of the Islamic religion, to philosophy, literature, history and the contemporary history of the Middle East. Books on art history, science, geography, and a substantial inventory of travel literature are also provided. Other sources are collected in Western languages ​​, Arabic and Persian, and Turkish. The library contains a large number of Lebanese fiction and academic literature from various genres and themes. These are complemented by academic literature from related disciplines, including political science, social anthropology and sociology.

Publication series

The OIB publishes two series of publications and an online publication series.

  • In the series Bibliotheca Islamica ( النشرات الإسلامية / an - al - Islamiyya Našarāt ) manuscripts are edited in book form since the 11th century. These critical editions include Arabic, Persian and Turkish texts and topics ranging from the history and prosopography about literature and theology to Sufism.
  • Scientific studies, monographs and conference reports are published in German, English, Arabic and French in the series Beirut Texts and Studies.
  • In cooperation with the Orient- Institut Istanbul OIB published online publication series Oriental Institute Studies on perspectivia.net. This series of publications is to connect regional and trans-regional perspectives on the Middle East and the Euro - Asian Studies.
