Intersection of Optima × Villard Blanc

The white grape Orion is a new breed between Optima and Villard Blanc. The crossing was made in 1964 by Gerhardt Alleweldt at the Institute for Grapevine Breeding Geilweilerhof Siebeldingen / Pfalz. The variety received the plant variety protection in 1994 and was entered in the same year in the list of varieties. The name is derived from the constellation Orion.

Orion is similarly resistant to frost as Riesling and sufficiently resistant to mildew (downy mildew and powdery mildew). In Germany about 4 hectares of vineyards are planted (as of 2007 ); small stocks are also in the south of England, Switzerland, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The flowery, fresh wine is similar to the type often the Müller -Thurgau. The wines of Orion tend to somewhat more rapid aging, which is why a too long storage should be avoided.
