Þórisvatn

The Þórisvatn is a lake in the Icelandic highlands. It lies largely in the community Ásahreppur as well as a small part in the community Rangárþing Ytra.

Geography and description

Þórisvatn, the largest lake in Iceland, located at the southern end of the sprengisandur slope and north of the volcanic Veiðivötn.

It is a considerably enlarged by damming lake whose surface is on average 83-88 square kilometers in water depths of up to 113 m.

The water from numerous sources is collected here. The river Kaldakvísl was diverted and flows into the reservoir. The water energy is availed in Vatnsfell power station, from where the water flows further in the Sigöldulón.

Striking is the most turquoise color of the lake, which so clearly distinguishes itself from all around the gray-black lava desert.
