Örjan Ouchterlony

Örjan Ouchterlony Thomas Gunnarson ( born January 14, 1914 in Stockholm; † 25 December 2004) was a Swedish physician and bacteriologist.

Life and work

Ouchterlony completed his medical studies until 1942 at the Karolinska Institute. Then he was at the state laboratory for bacteriology ( Statens Bakteriologiska laboratory ) active, interrupted by a stay at Jacques Oudin at the Institut Pasteur. In 1949 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the diagnosis of diphtheria. From 1952 he was professor of bacteriology at the University of Gothenburg. In addition to residencies at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital ( 1954) and the University of Montana ( 1972), Ouchterlony was also to laboratories in developing countries operate ( Hyderabad, 1959, Dacca, 1968, Mwanza, 1985). In 1980 he became Professor Emeritus.

He developed the named after him two-dimensional immunodiffusion test ( Ouchterlony test) for the immunological identification of antigens.

In 1961 Ouchterlony awarded the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize. He was a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala (1960), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences ( 1968) and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (1971).

Ouchterlony was married from 1942 to Marianne Schröder. The couple had six sons.
