The Orla outdated, even Orlah or Orlau is 35 km long right tributary of the Saale in eastern Thuringia.

It rises east of the city Triptis, where it is dammed and the barrier Triptis. The river first flows about 20 miles to the west, flows through it Neustadt an der Orla and then bends at Pössneck to the north. After another 15 kilometers, the Orla opens in Orlamünde in the Saale ( position → 50.77315511972211.546212434722 ). Both rivers provide the Saale- Orla-Kreis name. The river Orla signifies the Orlasenke.

The river is accessible in its course to the bike path ' Orlaradweg '.

Origin of the name

For the names of origin, there are two explanations. The one claiming a Slavic origin of orel or orol ( eagle), after the other is the name of Celtic origin and stir of Are (Bear) ago. The name would mean in this case bears water.
