Þorlákshöfn

The port city is located in the municipality Þorlákshöfn Ölfus in southwest Iceland and has 1582 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009). The place is 52 km from the capital Reykjavik.

On the flat, almost harbourless Þorlákshöfn south coast is the only major port in addition to the 400 km eastern Höfn. From here went to 2010 Herjólfur ferry to Heimaey to the islands of Vestmannaeyjar. The distance from Þorlákshöfn after Heimaey, which lies about 10 km off Iceland, is about 70 km away. Since July 2010, there is the side nearer to the Islands Port Landeyjahöfn, which was built specifically for the ferry to the islands. In certain weather conditions but the port of Þorlákshöfn is still used for this purpose.

The main industries are shipbuilding and fishing in Þorlákshöfn and processing.

Directly at the mouth of a bridge over the Ölfusá, the most water flow Islands. North West of the town is the Buri Cave.
