Þorlákur Runólfsson

Thorlákur Runólfsson (* 1086, † 1133 in Skálholt ) was a bishop of Skálholt in southern Iceland.

He held the office of bishop from 1118 until his death.

Family

His mother was the daughter of Snorri Þorfinnsson from Glaumbær in Skagafjordur. He was thus great-grandson of the legendary Greenland and America travelers Þorfinnur Karlsefni Þórðarson and Guðríður Thorbjarnardottir.

Training

He was educated in the then famous school of the vicarage in Haukadalur. The Skálholter Bishop Gissur Ísleifsson chose him as his successor. Thorlákur wanted this first not, among other things, he did not yet mature enough, but he finally relented and was consecrated on April 28, 1118 in Lund, Sweden.

Work

Together with Ketill Þorsteinsson, Bishop of Hólar, he stood for the introduction of canon law in Iceland.

Like his predecessors, he maintained in Skálholt a school.

He died in 1133 in Skálholt.
