Orlan

Orlan (* May 30, 1947 in Saint- Étienne as Mireille Suzanne Francette Porte ) is a French artist. It is an important representative of body art and performance art, and founder of the so-called Carnal Art She lives and works in Los Angeles, New York and Paris.

Work

Since 1978 Orlan uses her own body as a material artistic activity. Her face is changed by plastic surgery and aesthetic surgery. Orlan seeks examples from the history of art (Venus, Diana, Europa, Psyche, Mona Lisa ), famous female characters that are present in the collective visual memory. She insists on the right to change one's own body, as the technological changes in society provides opportunities, the standardized ideal of woman ( beautiful, young, slender) to break and the right to the design of one's body is to demand their own ideas yet. With the interpretation of meat as the material of art, she tries to have a discussion about these taboo subjects.
