Orlando Gibbons

Orlando Gibbons ( baptized * December 25, 1583 in Oxford, † June 5, 1625 in Canterbury ) was an English composer of the Renaissance.

Orlando Gibbons came from a musical family, his father William (around 1540-1595 ), his brothers Edward ( 1568-1650 ) and Ellis Gibbons ( 1573-1603 ) and his son Christopher are still well-known composers. Orlando Gibbons was in the period from 1590 to 1599 singer at King's College, Cambridge. ln 1614 he became organist at the Chapel of the New King James I., and remained there until his death. In 1623 he received the degree of Doctor of Music in Cambridge, a year later he took over the post of organist at Westminster Abbey in London.

Orlando Gibbons is one of the most important English composer of the 17th century. In his time, he was especially celebrated as a performing musician, he owes his fame mainly the anthems and services.
