Orlando Paladino

Orlando Paladino ( The knight Roland ) is a " dramma eroicomico ", a heroic- comic opera by Joseph Haydn ( 1732-1809 ) in three acts, which premiered on December 6, 1782 Schloss Esterházy. The libretto was written by Nunziato Porta. The plot is based on an episode from the worldwide bestseller " Orlando Furioso " by Ludovico Ariosto from 1516. The piece on a planned but not carried out visit of the Russian Grand Duke Paul and his German wife, Maria Feodorovna written and staged in the presence of Emperor Joseph II, was soon replayed throughout Europe.
