Orleans County (Vermont)

Orleans County is a county located in the state of Vermont in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Newport.

Geography

The County is bordered on the north by Canada and has an area of 1868 square kilometers, of which 61 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Essex County, Caledonia County, Lamoille County, Franklin County, Brome - Missisquoi (Canada), Memphrémagog (Canada) and Coaticook ( Canada).

History

Orleans County was formed on November 5, 1792 from parts of Chittenden County and Orange County.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census of 2000, there were 26 277 people in the county. There were 10,446 households, and 7,155 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.16 % White, 0.37 % African American, 0.65 % Native American, 0.30 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the 0.13 % percent from other ethnic groups; 1.37% were descended from two or more races. 0.72 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,446 households out of which 32.10 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.40 % were married couples living together, 9.60% had a female householder with no husband. 31.50% were non-families. 25.20% of all households and 10.90 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.10 % under the age of 18, 7.10 % from 18 to 24, 26.80 % from 25 to 44 years, 25.90% between 45 and 64 years and 15.00% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.60 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.10 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,084, and the median income for a family was $ 36,630. Males have a median income of $ 27,964, women $ 20,779. The per capita income was $ 16,518. 14.10% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. 17.90% of those under age 18 and 10.90 % were 65 years or older.

In addition to the below 18 independent towns and a city exist in Orleans County and seven externally managed villages: Albany Village, Barton, Beebe Plain, Derby Center, Derby Line, North Troy and Orleans.
