Ornica

Ornica is a municipality in the Province of Bergamo in the Italian region Lombardy with 162 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Geography

Ornica located 30 km north of the provincial capital city of Bergamo and 70 km northeast of the city of Milan.

The neighboring municipalities are Cassiglio, Cusio, Gerola Alta ( SO) and Valtorta.

Attractions

The Chapel of the Madonna del Frassino dates from the 17th century. It was in gratitude of an alleged Madonna phenomenon built. According to legend, a walker is the Madonna appeared and came to the rescue when he was captured by bandits. Shortly after his release, a small chapel was built, which was expanded gradually to a church. The original name was Santuario Beata Vergine del Prato del Forno. Later the church Santuario del Frassino was called before it was given its present name.
