Ornithoctoninae, known in the English -speaking world and Earth Tiger, form a subfamily of tarantulas ( Theraphosidae ), which was described in 1895 by Reginald Innes Pocock.

The Ornithoctoninae is a tarantulas subfamily with a proven range in Asia: Sulawesi, Philippines, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and China. Most species live in Erdröhren, but there are also tree dwellers among them. They are considered defensive types. In Errors occur very quickly back to their burrow or cavity. Do not they have the opportunity to retreat, they go in Verteidigungs-/Drohstellung. Will they continue to provoke, they suggest usually only three or four times with its front legs and the buttons after the attackers before they bite.

The subfamily of Ornithoctoninae differs from the other sub- families of the family Theraphosidae by the presence of a large field of feathered hair ( Scopula ) on the outside of the chelicerae. This feature it shares with the Harpactirinae indeed, but differs from them by the form ( loosely related group thorn -like rods) of Stridulationsorgans between the Chelizerenaußenseite and Tastercoxainnenseite.

In pet shops and on tarantulas exchanges are mainly representatives of the genera Haplopelma, Ornithoctonus and Cyriopagopus to find that come for keeping the terrarium in question.

Haplopelma spp. are tube dwellers - by its position the base of the terrarium plays a subordinate role. Much more important is a high ground (at least 15 cm), which enables them to dig and create their tube. The attitude in the Haplopelma special basin as described by Wirth & Huber ( 2002) is recommended to describe. Particular attention should be straight with respect to the watering of the pool, placed here on their attitude method. The animals can alternatively be accommodated in one ( the highest possible ) Fauna box that is filled to about five inches below the lid with a potting mixture of sand and clay or a forest floor. With this attitude, however, go some advantages that offer the mentioned Haplopelma special pool, lost - especially in terms of the simple monitoring and controlling the animals. Terrarium temperatures of 23 ° -25 ° C is sufficient.

Cyriopagopus spp. however, should be housed in a terrarium for tree dwellers, in which was a higher bottom layer was introduced, as the animals in captivity - expand their burrow in the ground - especially in juvenile stages.
