Ornö

Ornö is almost 49 km ², 3-4 km wide and about 15 km in length, the largest island in the southern Stockholm archipelago belongs to the municipality in Haninge Stockholm County.

Ornö is connected to the mainland by a ferry operated by the Company Waxholmsbolaget of Dalaro after Hässelmara - about 30 minutes - connected in the northwest of the island and to other piers. On the island, about 300 permanent residents live; in summer you can multiply their number. There are several major tourist resorts with Stugas ( holiday homes).

Every year, late May, a sailing regatta called Ornö Runt place with a large number of participants. The race route is inter alia to the neighboring islands and Uto Fjärdlång along.

Ornö was until April 1997 military zone, foreigners have only since admission. However, there are still occasional entry into and Fotografierverbote.

A settlement has already been demonstrated for the Bronze Age in the area of Hässelmara there are stone circles. In the Middle Ages there was iron ore mining, feldspar 1914-1965 was obtained.

The fauna recorded moose and reindeer, buzzard, sea and fish eagle and on some lakes throated diver.
