Orny is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Orny is at 467 m above sea level. M., 1 km northeast of La Sarraz and 18 km north of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The former street line village extends on both sides of Nozon river in a small little valley on the southern edge of the Orbeebene, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​5.6 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Mittelland. The southwestern part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Nozon who steps out here from the foot of the Jura plateau in the Orbeebene. West of the village goes to the church floor to the height Sur Crause (505 m above sea level. M. ), to the east of it on the hill Sur le Mont (504 m above sea level. M. ). The entire northeastern part of the municipal area comprises the southernmost area of ​​intensively farmed Orbeebene ( here around 450 m above sea level. M. ) with the remains of Entrerocheskanals. The southern boundary runs along the Mormont, a cross bar between the Venogetal and Orbeebene. This hill range forms the watershed between the basins of the Rhone and Rhine. On the northern slope of the skin you Mormont is 590 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Orny. From the municipality surface 1997 4 % came from settlements, 16 % of forest and shrubs, 79% to agriculture and slightly more than 1% was unproductive land.

Population

With 369 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Orny is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 90.1 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 3.9 % and 3.3 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Orny amounted in 1900 to 302 inhabitants. After the population had declined by 1980 to 193 people, a significant population increase was observed again.

Economy

Orny was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and vegetable crops have an important role in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the surrounding larger towns.

Traffic

The municipality is situated on the main street of La Sarraz to Orbe. Orny has no connection to the public transport network. The nearest railway station is located in La Sarraz on the railway line Cossonay- Vallorbe.

History

The territory of Orny was settled very early. It was crossed by a Roman road which linked Lausanne with Orbe. From the Roman period traces of a habitation and a milestone obtained. The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 593 under the name ornie. Later published numerous other names: Ornei ( 1012), Orniacum ( 1105), Hornie ( 1325 ), Ornye ( 1344) and Ornyez ( 1345 ). The origin of the name is unclear. This could have been derived from the Latin word either ornus (ash) or by the persons name Orinius or Aurinius.

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the lords of La Sarraz which the church in 1177 gave the Abbey Lac de Joux (L' Abbaye ). With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Orny came under the administration of the Bailiwick Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay.

Attractions

Orny has a remarkable church, which dates back to the 12th century in the core. Today's Protestant parish church of Notre-Dame was remodeled in the 14th and 16th centuries as well as 1845. Parts of the ship and the choir are Romanesque, the Gothic chapel dates from the 15th century. A special feature of late medieval bell tower is a stone roof in the form of a steep pyramid.

South of the church stands the castle, which once served as a rectory and was expanded in the mid 18th century and converted into a manor. It now houses a nursing home. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
