Þórólfsfell

Þórólfsfell is a panel volcano in southern Iceland. It reaches a height of 574 m.

Name and Sagas

The most famous manuscript on the colonization of Iceland, the land acquisition book, is reported by a Þórólfur Asksson who had taken possession of the area. Been inhabited was the court of his nephew, founded there. The son of this nephew, Njáll, suffered a memorable fate and became the hero of a famous Icelandic sagas.

Location

The panel volcano is located in the east of Fljótshlíð and at the outlet of the valley Þórsmörk.

Volcanism

The mountain comes from the Ice Age. Its lower part consists of basalt, the top of pillow lava, as is typical for basaltic volcanoes panel.

Larger became famous for the mountain in 2010, because from there the view was particularly well to the eruptions in Eyjafjallajökull. This also took advantage of Internet companies and put there video cameras, which were broadcasting the events on the Internet.

On the west side of the mountain is the cave Mögugilshellir.

Transport links

A dirt road leads past the foot of the mountain and has connection to the cross-country ski run Fjallabak Syðra. To the west, it is an extension of the Tea Road after Fljótshlíð.
