Orono is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located in Hennepin County and has about 7500 inhabitants.

Geography

Orono is located on the north shore of Lake Minnetonka with many bays and several islands. The largest islands are Big Iceland ( with the Big Iceland Regional Park ) and Mapiyata Iceland. The city of Long Lake Orono has an enclave within the city limits. The city is located about 26 kilometers west of Minneapolis in the metropolitan Minneapolis -Saint Paul. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area is 64.8 square kilometers, of which 23.2 square miles of water.

History

Orono was established as a township in 1889. Previously, the area was a part of Medina. It was named by settlers after the city in Maine, who had come from there to Minnesota. 1955 Orono received the city status.
