Oroya is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the locality of the first plants to the Peruvian town of La Oroya, from.

Description

The usually single, but sometimes vieltriebigen species of the genus Oroya have a bulbous root. Your flachkugeligen or pressed spherical to short cylindrical shoots have many fins, which sometimes form low warts. On them sit long, narrow areoles from which spring from 1-6 central spines and several comb-like spines arranged.

The bell - to funnel-shaped flowers are red to pink to yellow, often forming a flower ring. Your flower tube is occupied very short and with small scales. The areoles of flower cups and flower-tube are a bit woolly.

The more or less spherical, slightly fleshy fruits are yellow or red, covered with small scales and have a perennial flower rest. They contain helmet-shaped, reddish-brown seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The genus is widespread Oroya in the Peruvian Andes. The first plants were collected from August Weber farmhouse near La Oroya. Karl Moritz Schumann described this in 1903 as Echinocactus peruvianus. In their first description of the genus Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1922 established this as the only way in their newly established species. The type species of the genus is therefore Echinocactus peruvianus.
