Orpierre

Orpierre is a commune with 330 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the French Alps near Provence. The village is located about 120 km south of Grenoble, near the town of Sisteron. It is the capital of the canton Orpierre, a canton in the Arrondissement Gap.

The former fief of the "Prince d' Orange" has preserved its medieval character. The climate is Mediterranean influenced, due to the altitude of the area ( about 700 m) but moderate and depending on the weather cold.

Orpierre is surrounded by cliffs and has developed into an interesting climbing area. Even in the immediate vicinity of the village there are undeveloped for climbing rock walls. The place is almost entirely geared to the international climbing hosts: There is a climbing shop, a tourist office, a grocery store, a bar and restaurant ( on the weekend pizza, or salad and international potpourri from the freezer ), two tent sites (one is directly from the site and a few kilometers away) and some Gites especially in the old town.
