Ortaköy Mosque

The Ortaköy Mosque (Turkish: Ortaköy Camii; actually Büyük mecidiye Camii ) is a mosque in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district in the harbor of Ortaköy. It was built in order Abdülmecids I. in the years 1853-1856.

History

At the direction Mahmud Agas, the son- of the Grand Vizier İbrahim Pasha, a prayer house was built in 1721 at its present location Ortaköy Mosque. This was the so-called Halil Patrona rebellion in 1730 severely damaged and rebuilt probably the end of the 1740s in order Devattar Mehmed Kethüda Agas, the son- Mahmud Agas, with a minaret and a box for the Sultan ( Mahfel -i Humayun ).

1853 commissioned the architect Abdülmecid I Nigoğayos Bey Balyan with the construction of a new mosque. The planned in the style of Neo-Baroque Ortaköy Mosque was completed in 1856. 1894 had to be renovated the building after an earthquake. In 1960, the foundation has been strengthened. After the fire was 1984, another restoration.
