Orthodox synagogue in Košice

The New Orthodox synagogue in Kosice, a city in eastern Slovakia, was built in 1926/27. The synagogue on the road Puškinova, in the historic center of the city, is a protected monument.

History

The synagogue was built after the plans of architect Ľudovít Oelschläger (1896-1984) and consecrated in 1927. It can accommodate 800 worshipers. In recent years, the synagogue has been extensively renovated.

Today the synagogue is only used on the Jewish High Holidays. Otherwise, the services are held in the street Zvonarska in a prayer hall.

Commemoration

There is a plaque in memory of the Jewish citizens of the city who were deported and murdered during World War II on the wall of the Orthodox synagogue in Košice.
