Ortignano Raggiolo

Ortignano Raggiolo is a municipality with 888 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 37 km ². It is located about 25 km north- west of Arezzo and 40 km southeast of Florence in the Casentino valley and along the river Teggina.

The districts include Badia a Tega, Raggiolo, San Piero in Frassino and Villa.

The neighboring municipalities are Bibbiena, Castel Focognano, Castel San Niccolò, Loro Ciuffenna and Poppi.

History

The village was founded in 1873 as a merger of the previously independent municipalities and Ortignano Raggiolo. The name of Ortignano was mentioned in 1247 for the first time and probably derives from the Roman name Hortinius, the name of Raggiolo other hand, was already 967, still under the name Ragiola attested. He comes from the Latin word radius, here in the sense of boundary. To Ortignano the districts Badia a Tega, Frassina and Uzzano Casentinese, Raggiolo were against it, however, had none.
