Ortonovo

Ortonovo ( in Ligurian: Ortunövu ) is a municipality with 8393 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Liguria. Politically it belongs to the province of La Spezia.

Geography

Ortonovo is the easternmost municipality of Liguria and located at the foot of the Apuan Alps, on the border with Tuscany.

The nucleus of the village is located on one of the hills which border the Magraebene. The bulk of the common land lies in this range of hills, although a part, is in the plane, in the area of the ancient Luni. On the territory of Ortonovo also is the weather station of Sarzana Luni, which is recognized by the World Meteorological Organization.

In the surroundings of the village is the historic Borgo di Nicola, which was also built on a hill below the Apuan Alps is located.

History

Nearby are the ruins of the archaeological site of Luna, a former Roman colony lie.

Economy

The economy is based on crafts, agriculture (mainly the cultivation of grapes and olives ) and the production or processing of wine and vegetable oils.
