Ortrugo

The white grape Ortrugo is an indigenous grape of northern Italy. You may have come from the region Oltrepò Pavese or from Emilia -Romagna. The numerous synonyms place in any case close to a wide distribution. The synonym Trebbiano di Tortona could be an indication of the location Tortona in Piedmont. Ortrugo was almost completely disappeared in the late 1960s. However, she was selected and promoted new to old Rebbe stands. Today, there are again a number of producers and since the 1980s also own Denominazione di origine controllata (short doc) for the wine, the Colli Piacenti.

The wines are from pale straw yellow to greenish shimmering color and have a soft natural carbonation. Therefore, they are often produced as a sparkling wine and, more recently, as Spumante.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The shoot tip is white greenish colored, with red-violet approach. The young leaves are slightly hairy and woolly yellowish-green color.
  • The large leaves are three-to five-lobed and barely sinuate. The petiole is U-shaped open. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are medium in size compared to other varieties.
  • The cone - shaped to cylindrical cluster is large, usually shouldered and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are medium in size and of a greenish-yellow color. The flavor of the berries is neutral.

The grew strong varietal ripens about 30 days after Chasselas, and thus is considered very late maturing. It is generally resistant to disease, but is considered due to their Dichtbeerigkeit as susceptible to the raw rot.
