Orzens

Orzens is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Orzens is located on 622 m above sea level. M., 7 km south-southeast of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The village street line extends on the upper western flank of the Mentue, Molassehügelland in the northern Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.2 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the hill country between the Orbeebene and Broye. Orzens occupies the relatively gently sloping hillside to the east of the broad ridge between the valley of Buron the west and the valley system of Sauteru and Mentue in the east. The slope is divided by the small valley of Barbeire. To the east of the municipality extends to the bottom Sauteru; the southeastern border is to be left tributary Greyle. Population

With 195 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Orzens one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 95.9 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 1.5 % and 1.0 % in English (as of 2000). The population of Orzens amounted in 1900 to 281 inhabitants. After the population had declined by 1980 to 164 persons, a slight increase in population was registered again since then.

Economy

Orzens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, Orzens has also developed into a residential community. Some employed persons are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, on a road from Essertines -sur- Yverdon Donneloye. By Postbus course, which runs from Yverdon Bercher, Orzens is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1177 under the name Orsens, 1226 appeared the name Orseins. Same as the name of the neighboring village of Ursins the name comes probably from the Burgundian people named Urs (from the Latin ursus, Bear) and means for the people of Urs.

Orzens belonged in the Middle Ages to the rule of Saint -Martin- du- Chêne, later to that of Bioley- Magnoux. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon. Under the Bernese rule, it formed its own little rule. After the collapse of the ancien régime Orzens belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Yverdon.

Attractions

The Castle of Orzens, a stately house with a small residential tower, was built in 1700. It was founded in 1907 resurfaced and renovated in 1942. The church is located on the south of the village field. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
