OS X Mountain Lion

OS X 10.8 ( Lion Mountain, referred to as the first version of the operating system no longer as " Mac OS X") is the ninth version of the operating system OS X, the company Apple Inc. The operating system is the successor to Mac OS X 10.7 ( "Lion" ) and was published on 25 July 2012. The operating system version continues that began with the previous integration of software and design concepts in-house iOS platform. The operating system is sold exclusively through the Mac App Store. This distribution method had already been introduced with the previous version, this was, however, also sold on a USB storage device. In the first four days of Publications three million copies of the software were sold until mid- September 2012 seven million copies.

The operating system was unveiled on 16 February 2012 as a beta version for the first time to the public. The first developer preview was released on the same day.

Current version is OS X 10.8.5 on 12 September 2013.

On October 22, 2013 OS X 10.9 was released Mavericks as successor to 10.8.

Changes and new features (selection)

  • System-wide AirPlay support, so far in iTunes, this was only possible for audio content (only on newer computer models )
  • System-wide AirPlay support for audio content, including synchronization of QuickTime videos (all models )
  • Broader integration of cloud computing service iCloud
  • Dictation (voice recognition is carried out on Apple servers)
  • Integration of the games network Game Center
  • Messages, instant messaging, replaces iChat also supports iMessage, already available as a beta version for "Lion"
  • Reminders, task management
  • Message center, system-wide notification service
  • Notes program for managing notes, previously integrated into mail
  • Gatekeeper, background service for optional restriction of the installation sources from third-party software, monitoring of program start
  • Integration of the short message service Twitter and social network Facebook
  • Power Nap - Backup and synchronization in sleep mode only on selected current computer models
  • The previously independent software upgrade program is integrated into the Mac App Store
  • Safari 6, revised search via address bar, synchronization of open web pages (tabs ) with Safari on iOS devices
  • Advanced Chinese- support ( input methods, fonts, dictionary )
  • RSS support in e -mail program and the Safari browser no longer
  • X11.app is no longer part of the operating system, Apple supports instead the development of XQuartz and forwarded to the project properly
