Oscar Goodman

Oscar Baylin Goodman ( born June 26, 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an attorney and was from 1999 to 2011 mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Biography

Goodman was born in a Jewish family in Philadelphia. In 1961 he joined the Haverford College from. In 1964 he received from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, his Doctor of Law. In 1965 he was admitted to the Nevada Bar Association, and from 1966 to 1967 he was in the Clark County Public Defender. He is married and has four children.

During his career as a trial lawyer, he was the attorney of some of the most important factors of organized crime, such as Meyer Lansky, Nicky Scarfo, Phil Leonetti, the former head of the Stardust Casino, Frank " Lefty " Rosenthal and Anthony Spilotro, the was notorious for its violent nature. In the film Casino Spilotro was portrayed by Joe Pesci, and Goodman had a cameo.

On 8 June 1999 Goodman was elected with 63.76 % of the votes for mayor of Las Vegas. Since 28 June 1999, he is the first mayor of Las Vegas, whose face can be seen on casino chips. The chips were released from Four Queens Hotel and Casino. In the election in April 2007, Goodman was re-elected with 84 % of the vote for another four years.
