Oscar Luigi Scalfaro

Oscar Luigi Scalfaro ( born September 9, 1918 in Novara, Novara Province; † 29 January 2012 ) was an Italian politician and member of the Christian Democrats (DC). From 1992 to 1999 he was President of the Italian Republic.

Career

Scalfaro graduated in law at the Catholic University of Milan and then worked as a judge. The practicing Catholic, was active at a young age in Christian lay organizations and helped in World War II imprisoned anti-Fascists and their families.

As early as 1946 he was elected a deputy of the Constituent Assembly and represented then to 1992 Piedmont in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Italian parliament. In 1954 he was first secretary of state in the Ministry of Labour, and later in the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Education. From 1966 to 1968 he served as Minister of Transport under Prime Minister Aldo Moro. After the term of office as vice president of the Chamber of Deputies from 1976 to 1983 he was in 1983 in the cabinet of Bettino Craxi Secretary. When he resigned in 1987 from his position as Prime Minister, Scalfaro was indeed asked to form a new government, but failed it.

After the parliamentary elections on 5/6 April 1992 he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies. One and a half months later, on 25 May 1992, Scalfaro was elected with a majority of 672 votes for President of the Republic in the 16th round. As such, he took over from his party colleague Francesco Cossiga, who resigned on 28 April 1992 and thus six weeks before the expiration of the regular term. During his tenure, President Scalfaro appealed to the population, against organized crime, a new resistance movement ( the Resistance ) to form. The term of office ended Scalfaros 1999. Became his successor Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

Scalfaro was for life in the Italian Senate member since 1999.
