Oscar Moore

Oscar Fred Moore ( born December 25, 1916 in Austin, Texas, † October 8, 1981 in Las Vegas, Nevada) was an American jazz guitarist. He played in the 1937-1949 Nat King Cole Trio.

Life and work

1934 Oscar Moore began as a professional musician with his brother Johnny Moore. In 1937 he joined the Nat King Cole trio, whose sound he helped to shape decisively until 1949. In addition, Moore released records under his own name, so the albums Oscar Moore Trio and Fabulous Guitar. With his brother Jimmy, he founded in Los Angeles, the band The Three Blazers which lasted until the 1950s, but her career was not very successful. Otherwise, Oscar Moore later worked in the pop field.

He participated also on plates by Lionel Hampton, Art Tatum (1941 ), the Capitol Jazzmen, and Lester Young. In 1965 he took another Nat King Cole tribute album.

His colleague Kenny Burrell commented on the importance of the guitarist, who was widely underestimated in the shadow of Charlie Christian: Oscar Moore was quite revolutionary with its harmonious conception, especially in his chord structures; he played fantastically beautiful and has determined apart from me, a number of people inspired Barney Kessel said that Moore had virtually created the role of jazz guitarists in bands with a small ensemble.
