Oscar von Gebhardt

Oscar Leopold von Gebhardt ( born June 22, 1844 in Wesenberg, Estonia, † May 9, 1906 in Leipzig ) was a German theologian and librarian.

Life

At the age of two years Gebhardt lost his mother. When he was four years old, his father died. After the death of his parents took him his uncle, a pastor from St. John (Estonia) on. He attended high school on the island of Saaremaa. 1862 Gebhardt began to study theology in Dorpat, Leipzig, Tübingen, Erlangen and Göttingen. After these studies, he devoted himself to the Greek manuscript studies and the library shelving. From May 1875 Gebhardt was a volunteer at the library in Strasbourg. In October 1875 he was appointed assistant at the University Library of Leipzig. Gebhardt worked since October 1876 as a curator and as of January 1877 assistant librarian at Halle. In January 1880 he went as a librarian in Göttingen and was appointed in May 1884 to the librarian at the Royal Library in Berlin. His title of Professor Gebhardt received in January 1889. He took over in September 1891 as Director of the publication department of the Royal Library. In April 1893 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Book and Writing Studies at the University Library in Leipzig Chief Librarian and the University of Leipzig. In the Leipzig University Library, he received the Director title in May 1901. Gebhardt among the most important connoisseurs of Greek manuscripts and was an outstanding researcher in the field of New Testament and early Christian literature.
