Oscar von Sydow

Oscar Fredrik von Sydow ( born July 12, 1873 in Kalmar, † August 19, 1936 ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden ( Sveriges Statsminister ).

Study and career

The son of a magistrate secretary began in 1890 to study law at Uppsala University, where he graduated in 1894 with a diploma.

Subsequently, he was an employee and later a judge at the Court of Appeal Svea hovrätt where he rose to 1907 and 1909 to the Judicial Assessor ( hovrättsråd ).

Political career

Secretary, Government Minister and Minister

In 1906 he interrupted his career at Court of Appeal of Svea and was then to 1911 at the same time expedition leader (Secretary of State ), Ministry of Public Administration ( Civildepartementet ) .. This ministry was responsible at that time for commercial, industrial, communications, county council and county ( county council ) Cities and Towns, social Affairs and Posts and Telegraphs.

He then in 1911 became President of the Government of the province of Norrbotten. This office he held until 1914.

On February 17, 1914 Prime Minister Hjalmar Hammarskjöld called him self to the Minister of Public Administration. This office he held until the end of his term of office on 30 March 1917. The most important event during his tenure as Prime Minister was the establishment of the unemployment Commission ( Arbetslöshetskommissionen ).

Subsequently, he was from 1917 to 1934 President of the Government of the Province Gothenburg and Bohus.

Prime minister

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Louis de Geer for his defeat in a confidence vote he was appointed by King Gustav V on 23 February 1921 Prime Minister after former Prime Minister Karl Hjalmar Branting had twice rejected the formation of a government.

During his reign, a law abolishing the death penalty was adopted. However, on 13 October 1921, he had already resign as prime minister again after the Social Democratic Party had voted despite previous agreements against key financial and defense laws.

From 1934 until his death he served as head of the Reich Marshal Royal courtiers.
