OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (English Representative on Freedom of the Media, RFOM ) is one of three independent institutions of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ( OSCE) and to monitor the situation of media freedom in all 56 OSCE participating States. The Media Relations Officer takes on as an early warning of violations of press and media freedom was and supports the implementation of OSCE principles in this area.

The Office was established with the adoption of the mandate with Decision No. 193 at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council on 5 November 1997 set up with its headquarters in Vienna. The Media Officer is assumed independent of the General Secretariat of the OSCE and similar to the High Commissioner on National Minorities and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Chairman as an institution.

The Media Officer shall be appointed for a period of three years (with the possibility to extend the term of office once) by the Ministerial Council of the OSCE.
