The County is located in the central north east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is in the east about 55 miles from Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, away and has an area of 1480 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. History

Oscoda County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.
