Oskar Kuhn

Oskar Kuhn ( born March 7, 1908 in Munich, † 1990) was a German vertebrate paleontologist.

Life

Kuhn went to Dinkelsbühl and Bamberg to school and studied natural sciences and especially geology and paleontology at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1932. There he worked even after the doctorate, on Fossilium Catalogus (Department reptiles and amphibians) and went in 1938 to the University of Halle, where he worked on the fossils of the Geiseltal. Between 1933 and 1936 he was a member of the SA. In 1939 he received his doctorate in Halle on the fauna of the Keuper of Halberstadt. In 1940 he became private, but was in 1941 after a bitter dispute (partly for political reasons ) dismissed with his boss and former mentor John Weigelt ( revocation of teaching certificate ) and was briefly a soldier until he was dismissed in February 1942 with a lung condition. After the war, in 1947 he became an associate professor at the Philosophical- Theological College Bamberg, left there but soon it from. Later he was in Munich.

He wrote numerous books on paleontology. He edited the section reptiles and amphibians in the Fossilium Catalogus (25 Partes 1933-1965 ).

In 1955 he published the villages in the Sass quarries west of Bamberg (whose rocks document the time the turn of Triassic to Jurassic and emerged on a fresh water lake ) discovered the world 's oldest true leaf ( Sassendorfites benkerti ). In 1958 he published from the same layers dinosaur tracks ( he Coelurosaurichnus sassendorfensis attributed ). Dinosaur finds from this period are rare.

In 1938 he barg at Halberstadt [note 1] the remains of an originally complete skeleton of a predatory dinosaur of the genus Liliensternus the Triassic ( for unknown reasons, failed before the rescue).

He was a staunch Catholic and a follower of formerly widely in German paleontology alternative theories of evolution ( Typostrophenlehre ). He explained, for example, 1965: "Whether we should include all animals and plants into a single evolutionary process, we can not decide, especially since the first two thirds of evolution are not supported by paleontological documents ". And further: " The very fact of the absence of almost all Precambrian documents is reason enough to be cautious on the question of whether we are dealing with a single, all-encompassing process of evolution.
