Oskar Trautmann

Paul Oskar Trautmann ( born May 7, 1877 in Stradow, † December 10, 1950 in Schlichow ) was a German diplomat.

Life

After studying law Trautmann 1904 employees at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin and was promoted 1907 to 1914 as Vice Consul in Saint Petersburg. In the peace negotiations he was 1920 Press Reference in spa. In 1921 he was Consul General for Kobe in Japan and 1922 Counsellor in Tokyo. From 1926 to 1931 he worked as Deputy Director and Head of the Eastern Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin.

As of 1931, Trautmann envoy and ambassador in Beijing and also a board member of the Chinese-German cultural and economic association. In 1935, he was ambassador in Nanjing, but only for a short time after he took office it came to the Sino-Japanese war. The then German East Asia policy was very fickle and to the Chinese government noticed Trautmann on January 27, 1937:

With the escalation of the conflict in Nanjing, he tried to intervene and arbitrate played the role of mediator in the negotiations on a non-violent as possible surrender of the city. This failed, however, and on 13 December 1937, it the Nanjing Massacre.

Trautmann in 1938 was recalled from Nanjing and was forced to leave China. 1942 was followed by the retirement.
